Traditional Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan martial art instruction certified by the US Soo Bahk Do MDK Fed. Inc. Our programs are individually tailored with special classes for adults, children, seniors (79+), and young children (as young as four).
Pre K Program:
Children as young as 4 years old can benefit from the supportive, nurturing, teaching environment at Winding River. The Pre K Martial arts program is specifically designed for young children. The classes are 30 minutes each with 2x weekly attendance recommended. Curriculum focuses on developing skills of concentration and listening, ability to focus and follow directions, respectful behaviors, development of coordination, and practical self-defense and safety drills. Children and adults with various learning disabilities such as autism, Asberger’s syndrome, ADD, and ADHD have benefited from the individual attention and specific training methodologies employed in our Pre K classes.
Children’s Program:
Our supportive, nurturing environment continues in the Children’s Beginner and Advanced Programs. The instructors provide consistent discipline and positive reinforcement while teaching valuable self-defense skills. Character building traits such as courage and perseverance are taught through the physical lessons of Soo Bahk Do. Self-confidence and self esteem increases as students progress through the different levels, reflecting their improvement in mind-body harmony. Winding River supports the total educational process by requiring schoolteacher feedback reports before a student is recommended for rank testing.
Teen Programs:
Preteens and teens face many challenges both internal and external. Changing body chemistry, growth spurts with the accompanying physical awkwardness, and unhealthy peer pressures all contribute to low self-esteem, trouble focusing, negative attitudes, and poor self-discipline. The training at Winding River replaces awkwardness with physical prowess and improved athletic ability. The deep levels of self-confidence and self-defense skills gained from this practice help young people to resist unhealthy peer pressures and negative attitudes. Children and teens in our Leadership Training Program learn how to be positive role models for others and community leaders who contribute to society. As children 9-14 are the most at risk for child abduction, the higher levels of awareness as well as defensive techniques help insure their safety, even when they are away from home.

Young Adult Programs:
Soo Bahk Do martial art instruction is an excellent physical and mental pursuit for college students and young professionals. Our martial art is part of many college physical education programs. Our head instructor, Master Frank Schermerhorn began training in just such a program as a college freshman in 1972. He became the head instructor in that program before he graduated. Because of the standards and unity of the US Soo Bahk Do MDK Federation, students who begin training at home and then leave for college can often continue training in their college towns. Many young instructors have taught Soo Bahk Do at their universities. When school is over and the work life has begun, Soo Bahk Do can fill in the gap when school sports are no longer available. As there is no “season” for Martial art training, you can enjoy the benefits year round. In the social realm, Winding River is a great place to meet other positive thinking, health conscious adults. We offer discounted program rates for college students.
